Cookery Competition 2016
In commemoration of World diabetes day, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes Metabolism, CMC Vellore, organized a Cookery Competition on the theme “ Healthy meal box for 12 year old school going children. It was an excellent opportunity to showcase how a mother’s innovative idea in making a healthy meal box can please the appetite a 12 year old school going child in addition to meeting the nutritional requirements.

Healthy lifestyle is the first step towards preventing and managing diabetes and many health problems. Healthy eating habits begin at home.It must include whole, minimally processed, nutritious food mainly those derived from plants – vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fruits. Quality and quantity both are equally important. Quality includes balance of low fat, moderate protein, restricted carbohydrate, high fiber, with adequate minerals and vitamins. Quantity is to feel satisfied and not full at the end of meal.
Diabetic diet doesn’t mean living in deprivation. The only difference is the need to pay attention to some of your food choices - most notably limiting the carbohydrates you eat, cutting out the sugars for the lifetime. Childhood obesity also contributes to diabetes. For the purpose of creating awareness among the home makers and encouraging their creativity, Cooking Competition is being held on September 24th, 2016at Darling Residency, Vellore.
The judges for the event were Dr.Preethi, Post Doctoral Fellow, Wellcome Research, CMC Vellore, Mrs Susan Tharakan and Mrs Sheby Rajiv, Campus Manager, Kagithapet Residence Association, CMC Vellore. The judges were very appreciative of the efforts putting by the participants and also stressed of the needs for easy to cook simple but healthy food items that will help to prevent the rise of diabetes.
A total of 21 teams exhibited their culinary skills in cooking based on the theme“Healthy meal box for a 12 year old school going child”. Ms Sharon and Ms.Nandini who prepared Frittatas – a snack made of mushrooms, egg, capsicum, spinach and milk won the 1st prize, the second prize was awarded to Mr. Vinod Kumar who prepared multigrain chapati and carrot chutney.
The third prize was shared by two contestants, Mrs. Roseline Raj and Ms. Anita who prepared “kofta stuffed with vegetable, fruit salad with beetroot roll and cabbage stuff roll. The Consolation Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Evangeline and Ms. Sandya Rice with Plantain pith. The second consolation prize was awarded to Mr. Murali who prepared vegetable pulao and apple raita, paneer fingers, fruit and nut rolls and banana smoothy. Mrs. Meenakshi also bagged the consolation prize for the item “ Kancheepuram idli made of raw rice, parboiled rice with green and red chutney.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2016, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Dia-Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Nursing Students at College of Nursing, CMC Vellore on October 11, 2016. Mr. T.S. Ravikumar, Professor & HOD of Accident & Emergency Nursing, was the Chief Guest for the day.
A total of 211 students are participated in Preliminary written test and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

NURSING QUIZ - PICTURES
In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2016, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at New Examination Hall, Bagayam College Campus on November 22, 2016. Dr. Deepak Abraham,Professor & Head,was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 17 teams participated in the Quiz competition and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2016, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism organized an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “Pregnancy and Diabetes” on 11th November, 2016 CMC Hospital Campus, near Main Entrance, to create awareness and knowledge about “Diabetes Mellitus” is one of the foremost aspects of preventive care. We are now feeling the threat of the global epidemic of “Diabetes” and it is essential to improve the awareness of not only the patient but also their family and friends.
A total of 628 General public were screened for diabetes at free of cost. The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy, Prosthetic &Orthotic Services and Dietary, along with Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism had put up stalls which displayed awareness and knowledge about diabetes and its complications, the scope to prevent it. Free blood tests to detect diabetes mellitus and free foot examination for person with diabetes in the exhibition.

The exhibition was started with a word of prayer by – Rev. Joji Philipand inauguratedby Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, CMC Vellore.
As part of the event Poster competition was conducted on the topic Pregnancy and Diabetes. Arround 56 staff and students of CMC Vellore actively participated and putup attractive and informative posters.
The visually delightful Posters were judged by Dr. Meredith Hawkins, MD, MS Professor of Medicine, Harold and Muriel Block Chair in Medicine, Director, Global Diabetes Institute, Co-Director, Einstein Diabetes Research Center, Mrs. Diana David, Professor, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore and Dr. Santhosh Benjamin, Associate Professor, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit-V, CMC Vellore
The first prizewas won by Ms. Lishma Shan, from B.Sc 3rd Year Student, second Prizeby Ms. ShaliniSasi, Staff nurse, O3West, the third prize by Mr. Francis Yesurajan Clinical Microbiology, Jurnior Research officer.
The consolation prizes were awarded to Ms. AdhavDipti, E Ward, Ms. Janaki from Q5 South and Ms. Suhasini, A7 Ward.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC has conducted an essay and painting competition for school students and Quiz program for teachers around Vellore & Chittoor on 28th January, 2017 at Darling Residency, Vellore.

Approximately 400 - 450 students and 60 teachers participated from 36 Schools for the Essay, Painting and Teachers Quiz Competition. The chief guest for the event was Ms. Kate Guenther, President, CMC Vellore Association. Ms. Kate Guenther appreciated the enthusiasm of the children and congratulated the winners. Specifically, the significant role of teachers in inculcating healthy habits in food pattern, physical activity was emphasized to achieve academic excellence.
The visually delightful paintings garnered with pristine creativity, were judged by Mrs. Sushila Russell, Reader in Clinical Psychology, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, CMC Vellore. Dr. Judy Ann John, Professor, PMR Unit-I, Vice Principal for AHS, CMC Vellore and Mrs. Mary Anbarasi Johnson, Professor, Category-1, College of Nursing .
The winners of the painting competition were Mr. Rupesh Kumar ( First prize - Shantineketan ), Mr.S Murali Manohar- ( second prize - NKM higher secondary school), and Ms. Gayathri ( Third Prize - Govt higher secondary school, Sathuvachari ). Consolation prizes were awarded to Ms Rupadarshini - Shristi - Matriculation school) , Ms G uma Maheswari ( Bhagwan Mahaveer Dayaniketan Jain School) and Mr Loshmin (Shristi - Matriculation school).
The Quiz competition winners were Mrs S.K Niramala and Mrs Sheela Raju (Ida scudder school), Mrs Ananda Lakshmi and Mrs Deepa ( Spark matriculation) and Mrs E. Bhagyarani and Mrs Shantini ( Kingston matriculation school).

SCHOOL COMPETITION - PICTURES
In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2016, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism of Christian Medical College & Hospital Vellore had organized a “ZUMBA” training session to enhance physical fitness amongst school children on 21st Nov 2016 at Ida Scudder Senior School in Virumthampet, Vellore.
A Total of 1,120 students participated in the session conducted by Mr. Platine and Ms. Sunitha who are professional Zumba, trainers. All students from Class VI to XII and the teachers enthusiastically participated in this innovative form of physical activity. The session was for 60 minutes, and introduced on the positive influence of appropriate physical exercise in shaping the health of an individual from the school going age.
Through this program we intend to educatethe school children about the advantages of regular exercise in their daily schedule to prevent non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart problems and obesity. Since the seeds of these diseases are laid in early childhood, inculcating healthy lifestyle patterns in these young minds will protect them from these conditions in future.
Zumba Training Programme
In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC has conducted a series of events namely Cookery Competition, Nursing Quiz, Medi Quiz, Essay Writing Competition in English & Tamil, Painting competition, Teacher’s Quiz, Exhibition & Poster Competition, and Self Composed Dance competition targeted towards school and college students around Vellore city from September 2016 to April 2017. In appreciation of a tremendous support we got from the people, we organized a valedictory function to felicitate the deserving winners in each event.
The chief guest for the occasion was the Prof. Jacob John, Consultant, Virologist & Former Head of Virology Pioneering Virologist in India, who advised children to understand exercise, control what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasized the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits.
A dance competition based on the theme "Electronic gadgets can cause obesity" was conducted. Around 160 students from 8 schools & 15 colleges participated in the competitions. Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by Krishnasamy School (NKV) followed by Vani Vidhyalayam, School in the second place and Spark matriculation higher secondary school in the third place and the consolation prize was awarded to Williams school.
Among colleges, Narayani College of Nursing won the first prize, followed by Kingston Engineering college (Mechanical Engineering), Katpadi and CMC College of Nursing, Vellore in the second and third places respectively. The consolation prize was awarded to St Johns School of Nursing
The event was concluded with a Vote of thanks by Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor & Head Unit-I, Endocrinology, CMC Vellore.
