World Diabetes Day Celebration 2009

As part of the World Diabetes Month celebrations, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a cookery competition on October 20. Dr. Lion Venkata Subhu, Managing Director, Darling Groups and Mrs. Startlet, Principal of Shristi Vidyashram Senior Secondary School were the chief guests. Mrs. Sarah Jacob, former Head of CMC’s Dietary Department was the judge. Twelve persons participated in the event. Mrs. Manimegalai from Viruthampet was adjudged first. The second prize went to Mrs. Shanthi from Ranipet, Mrs. K. Jeyalakshmi from Velapadi won the third prize.


Endo Quiz Competition for Medical Students : The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism organized Endo quiz for the medical students on October 27 at the CHTC Auditorium. Dr. Aravindan Nair, Professor and Head of Surgery Unit VI was the chief guest. The following were the prize winners in the Endo Quiz competition held on October 27: First place : Dimpu Edwin, David Jose and Harsha Teja Second place : Santhosh Kumar, George Abraham and George Mathew Third place : Ajith John George, Lijo John Tharakan and Rohit Barnabas.


The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism organised an exhibition on Diabetes on November 13. There were several stalls including free foot examination, fundus checking by Ophthalmology staff, diet education by the dietary staff, Doppler study and importance of MCR foot wear by the Prosthetic and Orthotic staff. A poster competition on 'Home Care Management' had several entries and the first place went to Ms. Dona Alex, College of Nursing.


The Department along with other diabetes care givers held a walkathon on November 14 from Worth Trust, Katpadi to Don Bosco High School, Gandhinagar. The walk was followed by a public meeting and Mr. Arivuselvam, Superintendent of Police spoke to the group of the officers and cadets of homeguards on the ill effects of smoking. Following this an interesting session of aerobics was organised by the PMR Department.


The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism has been conducting a host of competitions to create better awareness regarding diabetes. Results of the winners are given below: November 3, Nurses quiz : First prize - Ms. Divya, M.Sc.first year, Ms. Mythily Vandana, B. Sc. third year and Ms. B. Sophia Chellam, Diploma third year.

November 7, Teachers quiz : First prize - Mr.L. Krishnan and Mr. A. Soundararajan, N.K.S.M. Hr. Sec. School, Vellore. Painting competition : First prize - V. Priya, T.M.K.V.G.G. Hr. Sec. School, Vellore.


The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Dance and Music competition in connection with its World Diabetes Month activities that spanned a large part of October and November 2009. The programme was organised by the diabetes educators, pharmacists and secretaries of the Department. The competition had two categories with colleges vying for honours in the Senior section and schools competing in the Junior section. Four teams participated in the Senior section and the theme was “Diabetes and the Heart”. Top honours went to St. John’s School of Nursing. In the Junior section, Don Bosco Matriculation School won the first prize.

Dr. J. Kanakamani, Assistant Professor of Endocrinology and Dr. Sudeep, Consultant, compered the show. Dr. M.S. Seshadri, Prof and Head of Endocrinology mentioned the importance of good town planning and cycle lanes as public health measures to prevent diabetes. MISSIONS WORKSHOP WORLD DIABETES MONTH - VALEDICTORY FUNCTION The chief guest was the Mayor of Vellore Shri Karthikeyan. Prof Prathap Tharyan, Associate Director, highlighted the importance of a healthy mind. Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor of Endocrinology quoted words from “My Experiments with Truth” which are apt guidelines for the public to follow to enhance a healthy lifestyle. Gandhiji wrote: ”...I had read in books about the benefits of long walks in the open air and, having liked the advice, I had formed a habit of taking walks, which has remained with me. These walks gave me a fairly hardy constitution".
