World Diabetes Day Celebration 2013

As part of the World Diabetes Day celebrations, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, organized a Cookery Competition on 15th September,, 2013, in an effort to create awareness on the nutritional aspects of diabetes home management.

The guest for the evening Dr. Renu George, from the Department of Dermatology (CMC), spoke on the importance of a healthy diet in diabetes.  A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat and moderate in calories.  The judges for the event were Mrs. Mahendri, Head of the Department of Dietetics (CMC) and Dr. Anitha Alfred.

A total of 10 teams tested their culinary skills in cooking “Diabetic Sweet & Diabetic Salads”.  Mrs. Madeshwari  won the 1st prize, the 2nd prize went to Mrs. Meena Choudhary, and the 3rd prize was given to two winners, Mrs.Meena Rangan & Mrs. Priscilla Pari.

“Be the change you want to see in the world” was what Mahatma Gandhi had wanted the nation to believe in.  And for any significant change to occur, awareness remains the stepping stone.  As the Modern civilization struggles to face deadly diabetes epidemic, awareness and knowledge of healthy life style has become the need of the hour.  Centered around the World Diabetes Day celebrations, we, at the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism have taken up the daunting task of educating the young generation about the perils of diabetes and healthy ways to prevent its spread. With this aim in mind, on October 26th, 2013, we organized an essay and painting competition for school students themed on “Taking care of diabetes at work and  The Role of sports and games in preventing diabetes” respectively along with a Health oriented Quiz for school teachers.

We had more than 200 school students and 30 teachers participating in the competitions.

The visually delightful paintings were judged by Dr. Aruna Kakre, Dr. Rohin Mittal and Mrs. Reena Santhosh. The first prize went to M. Preethi Martina (St. Mary’s Girls Hr. Sec. School, Vellore), the second Prize to G. Krithiga (Ethiraj Matriculation Hr. Sec. School) and the third place to Nandhini (Seventh Day Academy).  Three consolation prizes were awarded to G. Kavya (Shrishti Matriculation Hr. Sec School), A. Parimar Singh (IDA Scudder School, Vellore) and C. Niklesh (Shristi Matriculation Sr. Hr. Sec. School, Vellore).

The Teachers quiz competition, was closely contested amongst five schools and after six exciting rounds, IDA Scudder School baged the first place followed by Auxillium Girls Hr. Sec. School in the second place and EVRN Hr. Sec School, in the third place.

The fun filled celebrations of the evening had a lasting impression on the young minds, who had turned up in large numbers to grace to occasion.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2013, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Nursing Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Nursing Students at College of Nursing on November 8th, 2013. Mrs. Rajeshwari, Professor, Community Health Nursing was the Chief Guest for the day.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC organized a cycle rally for school students, college students and people from all walks of life around Vellore city on November 13, 2013 a Cyclathon and Walkathon was flagged off from Ida Scudder School by the Honorable Collector, Dr. Nanthagopal, Nearly 300 participants cycled from Scudder School to Don Bosco School, Katpadi.  Followed by a public meeting at DON Bosco School, Katpadi, where Dr. H.S. Asha, Dr. Thomas V Paul, Dr. Go Bharani presided thereafter lively Aerobics, conducted by the Physiotherapy team headed by Mr. Samuel Vinoth.

The “Cycling 2013 campaign” is a forward “Step for Diabetes”, aimed at invigorating the youth to take up fight against diabetes. This step will promote diabetes awareness, improve the lives of people coping with diabetes, ensure healthy lifestyle patterns and reduce the future risk of developing diabetes.

Our humble efforts centered on “The World Diabetes Day” are nothing but a reinforcement that “No matter what your risk factors are, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise are the key to reduce your risk of developing diabetes”. It is a small step in this gigantic struggle against Diabetes, but As William Osler had once famously remarked, “It is important for all of us to remember what we can add to life, and not what we can get from life”

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2013, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at CHTC on November 29, 2013. Dr. Molly Jacob, H.O.D., Biochemistry was the Chief Guest for the day.

Medi Quiz 2013- Pictures



In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2013, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism organized an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “Sports & Diabetes” on 3rd December, 2013 near ISSCC Building, to create awareness and knowledge about “Diabetes Mellitus” is one of the foremost aspects of preventive care.  We are now feeling the threat of the global epidemic of “Diabetes” and it is essential to improve the awareness of not only the patient but also their family and friends.

Department of Dietary, Ophthalmology, Vascular Surgery, Physiotherapy, Prosthetic & Orthotic Services, along with Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism had put up stalls which displayed awareness and knowledge about diabetes and its complications, the scope to prevent it.  We also did free blood test to detect diabetes mellitus and free foot examination for person with diabetes in the exhibition.

Dr. Jayarani Premkumar, Nursing Superintendent was the Chief Guest for the day.  The visually delightful Posters were judged by Dr. Vinay M. Rao, Asst. Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Mrs. Lallu Joseph, Asst. Manager, Quality Management Cell and Mrs. Ellen Ebenezer, Deputy Nursing Superintendent).

The first prize went to Ms. Kalaiarasi (Staff Nurse, Labour Room), the second Prize to Ms. Pheba Philip (Staff Nurse, Community Health Nursing) and the third place to Ms. Menaka, (Staff Nurse, SHDU).


Exhibition- Pictures - 2013



In connection with the Commemoration of World Diabetes Month 2013, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Christian Medical College Vellore, has organized Valedictory function and a self-composed Dance Competition centered around School & College students in vellore on 8th March, 2014 at Darling Residency, Vellore.  The Department has taken up the daunting task of uniting the young and the old alike in  its endeavor to fight the deadly epidemic of diabetes.

The chief guest for the occasion was the Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, who advised children to understand and exercise, control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat.  He emphasised the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits. A dance competition on the theme "Diabetes and the Eye" was held.

Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, followed by Shanthiniketan Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the second place and Shrishti Matriculation Higher Secondary in the third place. Among colleges,  St. John Nursing College, Tutipet won the first prize, followed by Venkateswara Polytechnic College Vellore and  Scudder Memorial Hospital, School of Nursing, Ranipet in the second and third places respectively.
