World Diabetes Day Celebration-2023

The department of Endocrinology, CMC Vellore had organized a cookery competition on the theme “Diabetes Friendly Dinner” on the evening of 7th October, 2023, which was a melange to exhibit the culinary skills for the people of Vellore. The meeting was presided by Dr. Remya Rajan, Assistant Professor, Dept of Endocrinology and Metabolism, CMC Vellore. The Chief Guest for the event was Mrs. Alice Sony, Nursing Superintendent, CMC Vellore. The chief guest spoke about the importance of a balanced plate and portion control and said that she was amazed at the enthusiastic participation of the public.

The judges for the event were Dr. Jachin Velavan, Physician, Faculty and Former President of Distance Education Department of Distance Education, CMC Vellore, Dr. Leepica Dahiya, Head, Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore and Mrs. Regina Xavier, Professor & Head, Medical and Surgical Nursing, Specialty-I CMC Vellore.

Dr Leepica Dahiya stressed the need for adding protein in all diabetes meals to make them balanced.

The judges congratulated all the contestants for their enthusiasm and zeal in participation.

The event witnessed the zealous participation of 42 teams, which included teachers from various schools & colleges, staff from CMC Vellore and home makers. They showcased innovative ideas to make different kinds of delicious and nutritious diabetes friendly dinner. The recipes were evaluated on the basis of nutritive and calorific value, cost of ingredients, time duration of cooking, taste and proportioning of macronutrients.

The first prize was bagged by Rachel Karolin and Newton Eric who cooked pirandai pasta, millet balls and drumstick soup. The first runner up was Pradeep and Anshu Nathan who cooked salmon bowl with Greek salad and herbal soup. Pastin and Jonisha who cooked Ragi Pongal and chicken biriyani were the second runners up.




World Diabetes Cookery Competition 2023 - (VIDEOS)


In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023, The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, organised an Essay and Painting contest for school students from VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII classes and a Quiz competition for teachers Teams joined us from across Vellore and Ranipet District. The event was held on 21st October 2023, Saturday between 9.00am- 2.00pm at Darling Residency, Vellore. Our aim was to pique the students’ interest in all aspects of a healthy lifestyle, and the systemic and interpersonal challenges facing our citizens as they pursue better health. By educating and empowering the students we hope to educate and empower their families and the community at-large.

The topics for the competitions are :-

  • Painting competition : How can the government influence the long term policies in diabetes care and Prevention.
  • Essay Competition : Management of Diabetes in Marginalized and Underprivileged population
  • Teachers Quiz : General Health and non-communicable diseases-Scientific aspects and History.
 

The Essay competition saw 76 English entries and 64 Tamil entries. It was wonderful to witness the enthusiastic effort of the students who compiled and clearly presented their thoughts, opinions and ideas on the topic “Management of Diabetes in Marginalised and Underprivileged population.”

The painting competition was a visual treat, the students exceled in producing some brilliant artwork using a variety of techniques. The competitors performed a remarkable feat translating the theme “How can the government influence the long-term policies in diabetes care and prevention” in to a tangible display, crafted with pencils, sketch, crayons and water colours. The Judges for the event were, Dr. Srujan Sharma, Assistant Professor from Trauma Surgery, Dr. Jessica Vaddeswarapu, Radiologist from Radiology, Dr. Priya, Associate Professor from Pulmonary Medicine and Mrs. Alice Suresh, Nurse Manager, L Ward, CMC Vellore.

The judges were very generous in their praise of the students’ talents, noting that any one of the 79 entries could have been the winner. Miss. Irene Jasmine Joshua from Pincushion Montessori International School secured a deserving victory, second place was shared by miss. Sadhana from DAV Bhel and Jayashree S. from Pincushion Montessori International School. Ms. Mithra Devi, Pincushion Montessori International School, Ms. Jaishree from Ida Scudder School and Master. Prasad from Vellammal Bodhi campus took the joint third place. Consolation Prizes were also awarded.

We were honoured to welcome Prof. (Dr) Priya Abraham, Professor in Virology, Christian Medical College, Vellore & Former Director, National Institute of Virology, Pune (NIV) in our midst the as chief guest. Dr. Priya Abraham graced the occasion and delivered an outstanding chief guest address, highlighting the health crisis that India is currently facing as the ‘Diabetic capital’ of the world, and the public health burden that threatens to overwhelm our health care system.

There were 19 teams who took part in the preliminary round of the teachers quiz, with the top 4 teams progressing to the live final round. The teachers’ eager participation was well-received by the students who kept cheering them on. the team from St. Mary’s, Ms. Joice Immaculate and T. Roseline Sheeba took the crown, with the teachers from Ida Scudder school: Ms. Jaya Ruby Helkal and Ms. Gabriel Mary, and Vani Vidyalaya CBSE: Ms Sathya Sheela and Mr. Jagadish, sharing the second place, the third place went to Mr. Nandakumar and Ms. Sarala from Om Shakthi Narayani Matriculation School.

 

Essay & Painting Competition and Quiz for Teachers- 2023 (VIDEO)


In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at New Examination Hall, Bagayam College Campus on 3rd November 2023 Dr.Vinod Joseph Abraham, Vice Principal (UG), CMC Vellore was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 17 teams participated in the Quiz competition and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

The following were the Prize Winners :-

  • First Prize  - Christina Mary Thomas, A. Sreekanth, Mahesh Anand
  • Second Prize - Joe Prasanth, Joseph Ryan Alex Sargunam, Joseph John

Medi Quiz Pictures 2023


In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Dia-Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for the Nursing Students at College of Nursing, CMC Vellore on November 17, 2023. Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Dean, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore, was the Chief Guest for the day.

A total of 192 students are participated in Preliminary written test and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

The following were the Prize Winners :-

Dia Quiz for the Nursing Students 2023


In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2023, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore organized an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “Stroke and Diabetes” on 28th November 2023 at the CMC Hospital Campus near the main entrance between 9.30am and 5.00pm. The theme of this year was “Access to Diabetes Care”.

The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Physiotherapy, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Dietetics and Community Health Nursing, along with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism put up stalls which disseminated awareness about diabetes, its complications and the scope for its prevention. Screening for diabetes was performed for 225 patients. Foot and eye examination too was done for them. The patients also enjoyed Infotainment in the form of puppets show and games which served to further reinforce the message. Lucky draw was conducted for all registered patients and the six winners were given glucometers.

The exhibition began with a word of prayer by Rev. Rev. Samson Varghese. Dr. Rajesh, Medical Superintendent, CMC Vellore was the chief guest for the day. He spoke about the importance of Exercise, Life style modification and follow the medications as directed by the physicians in order to successfully manage diabetes.

Posters were judged by Dr. Saumya Susan, Assistant Professor from PMR, Mr. Pierre Edwin, Tutor Gr-I, from Physiotherapy and Mrs. Rebecca Sumathi Bai from Nursing.

Ms. Suganya. C, Staff Nurse from D104, Ranipet Campus bagged the first prize while the second prize and the third prize went to Ms. Mubarak Ali, Staff Nurse from Neuro OR and Ms. Leena. R, Staff Nurse from R Ward respectively. The consolation prizes were awarded to Mr. Rajkumar, Social Worker from Emergency Dept, and Ms. Keerthana B, Staff Nurse from ENT OR and Ms. Soundarya. P, Staff Nurse from Emergency Dept, Ranipet Campus.

Judges appreciated the dedication, research and good effort behind the organization and execution of the stalls. The Department of Cardiology was awarded the first prize while the Department of Dietary and Community Nursing Department were awarded 2nd Prize and 3rd Prize respectively.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2023, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, CMC, Vellore has, over the past 6 months conducted a series of events to raise awareness in the local community about the different aspects of Diabetes: it’s prevention, diagnosis, management and complications. The proceedings kicked off with a Cookery Competition for the general public held on 7th October 2023, this was followed by a Painting and Essay competition for school students, Teacher’s Quiz, Nursing Quiz for nursing students, Medi Quiz for medical students, a Poster Competition for CMC staff and students. The events culminated in a grand finale on 24th February, 2024 at Darling Residency, with a Self-Composed Dance competition for schools and colleges, with the theme: Kidney and Diabetes, followed by the Valedictory Function, which served as a token of appreciation for the enthusiastic participation and tremendous support received from the community.

The Valedictory Function was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. Solomon Sathish Kumar, Principal, Christian Medical College, Vellore. He applauded all participants for their zealous performance and the organising team for their co-ordinated efforts. In his address, Dr. Solomon highlighted the key role of Diabetes awareness, across the board, in the prevention, early diagnosis and effective management; he called attention to the condition’s ominous but well-deserved title of ‘Silent Killer’, stating that nearly 1 in 6 of us are likely to be diagnosed with diabetes in our lifetime, with many more living their lives unaware, unchecked and undiagnosed. Dr. Solomon urged the students to pursue a healthy and balanced lifestyle; recalling an anecdote from his own childhood, Dr. Solomon concluded his oration by stating that, in order to prioritise health and overall well-being, one must always remember to eat well, sleep well, play well and then study well. This hierarchy of activities earned quite a few cheers and thunderous applause from the gathered crowd which was composed largely of school and college students.

The judges for the event were Mrs. Anne Jarone, Nurse Manager, Obstetric Ward & Labour Room and Professor College of Nursing CMC Vellore, Dr. Divya Mulayil, Professor, Community Health, CMC Vellore, Dr. Marilyn Ninan, Associate Professor, Clinical Microbiology, CMC Vellore, Dr. Aparna Jagannathan, Assistant Professor, Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Surgery, CMC Vellore, Dr. Dhanoop Abraham Varghese, Assistant Professor, Critical Care & MICU, CMC Vellore, and Mr. Giridharan, Crescent Music School.

Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by the team from Spring Days CBSE Senior Secondary School, whose sparkling performance was reminiscent of Musical Theatre. The students stayed on theme while dazzling the judges and audience with their jaunty dance moves and powerful vocal stylings which included a contemporary rap segment. Bhagawan Mahaveer Dayanikethan Jain School secured the second place and the third prize was awarded to Kingston International School CBSE. Spark Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kingston Matric Higher Secondary School and Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Katpadi, received Consolation Prizes.

The College of Nursing, CMC Vellore Chittoor Campus won the first prize in their respective category. The winning team presented a vibrant tableau in classical dance style. Their expressive recital, thematic props, and the meaningful lyrics only added to the powerful story-telling, which served to spotlight the plight of kidneys and overall health when Diabetes runs rampant; unchecked. The College of Nursing, CMC Vellore and Dr Vimal College of Nursing, bagged the second and third places respectively. Consolation prizes were awarded to ADDON Institute of Medical Mission and Research Centre, School of Nursing, SIHRLC, Karigiri and St Johns School of Nursing, Vellore.
