Adult Young Diabetes / Type-1 Diabetes Clinic
Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism,
Christian Medical College, Vellore
The Adult Young Diabetes Clinic, initiated in 2009, is a once-weekly clinic aimed at empowering young adults with diabetes by equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for effective diabetes self-management. The clinic focuses on the prevention and management of hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic emergencies, while also supporting patients in coping with the psychosocial challenges of living with diabetes. The primary focus of the clinic is individuals with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
In addition, the clinic has a dedicated team with expertise in the diagnosis and management of other forms of diabetes affecting young individuals, including maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY), lipodystrophic diabetes, diabetes secondary to diseases of the exocrine pancreas, Type 2 diabetes in the young, and syndromic causes of diabetes.
Care is delivered through a multidisciplinary team comprising endocrinologists, diabetes educators, and a dietitian. The team provides individualized diabetes management plans through a structured care program that emphasizes diabetes self-management support and addresses barriers to effective self-care. Family members are actively involved in the care process to enhance support and improve long-term outcomes.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, peer group meetings were an integral part of clinic visits. These interactions among individuals with Type 1 diabetes and their families fostered peer support, reduced feelings of isolation, and enhanced self-confidence. Ongoing support is also provided through a 24-hour helpline and teleconsultation services, ensuring continuity of care as and when required.
