The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism received the Research Team of the Year Award during the 7th, 8th and 11th Annual Research Day by the Christian Medical College, Vellore.
11th Annual Research Day 2021
The 11th Annual Research Day was organised by the Office of Research, Christian Medical College, Vellore, on 21st and 22nd of October 2021 in the Scudder Auditorium and New Examination Hall. The programme showcased research activities undertaken by the faculty and students of Medical specialities, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, along with Field and Epidemiology, Bioengineering and the various PhD programmes at CMC, Vellore. This year also highlighted 'COVID-19 related basic, medical and surgical research' as a separate category. There was a total of 224 poster presentations and 245 podium presentations over two days.
The special programme on the second day began with a welcome address from Dr. Nihal Thomas (Head of Endocrinology Unit-I). Following this were felicitations by Dr. J.V. Peter (Director), Dr. Anna B. Pulimood (Principal) and Dr. Prasad Mathews (Medical Superintendent), in which they exhorted the students and faculty to inculcate a culture of basic, translational and clinical research.
The highlights of the evening ceremony were the Special Orations by distinguished retired faculty of the institution, Dr. Chandran Gnanamuthu (Professor of Neurology) and Dr. S. Gunasekaran Vaz (Professor of Physiology). Dr. Chandran spoke, reminiscing on the research journey of CMC over the past decades in the national and international context, and Dr. Gunasekaran dwelt on extensive lab and pre-clinical work on pancreatic islet transplantation. The Chief Guests were presented with citations and medals by their respective departments and senior administrators.
The prizes for the presentations were awarded during the valedictory ceremony. About 110 prizes were distributed for both categories by Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael, Vice Principal (AHS), Dr. Tripti Meriel Jacob, Vice Principal (PG), Dr. Suganthy R, Registrar, and Dr. Sushil Mathew John, Vice Principal (HR). The Dr. Shubhankar Mitra Memorial Award for the best Undergraduate paper for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences was given to Ms. Sara Elsa John (Medical), Ms. Jeemi Delles L (Nursing) and Ms. Sandra Susan Kuriakose (Allied Health). The programme concluded with a vote of thanks rendered by Dr. Suceena Alexander, Additional Vice Principal (Research), followed by the national anthem.
This year the Department of Endocrinology emerged as the overall Winners and were given the Rolling Trophy by the Chief Guests Dr. Chandran Gnanamuthu and Dr. S. Gunasekaran Vaz.

8th Annual Research Day 2017
The 8th Annual Research Day was held on 10th and 11th October 2017, for the first time as a two-day event. This year saw an excess of 270 abstracts, among which 122 were slotted for podium presentations and another 150 as posters. The abstracts were categorized into Medical Specialties, Surgical Specialties, Allied Health Sciences, Basic Sciences, Medical Students, Nursing, Field and Epidemiology, Bioengineering and PhD. There were 86 prize winners together in both podium and poster presentation.
The highlights of the evening programme were the Special Orations by two distinguished faculty: Professor A.S. Balasubramaniam, Retired Head of the Department of Neurochemistry, and Professor B.S. Ramakrishna, Retired Head of the Department of Gastroenterology. The citation of the chief guest was read by Dr. Biju George, Addl. Vice Principal (Research). The Chief Guests were felicitated by Dr. C.E. Eapen, Dr. Sitara Swarna Rao, Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Dr. Ebby George Simon, Dr. Mathew Alexander and Dr. Ari George Chacko.
The Shubhanker Mitra Memorial Award for the best Undergraduate presentation during the Annual Research Day, for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, was given by Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Principal, to Ms. Annsmol P. Markose and Mr. Abhijit Goyal, and Ms. Prescilla S. and Ms. Shalin Arambhan respectively.
For the second consecutive year (2016 & 2017), the Department of Endocrinology emerged as the overall Winners and were given the Rolling Trophy by Chief Guests Professor A.S. Balasubramaniam and Professor B.S. Ramakrishna.

7th Annual Research Day 2016
The 7th Annual Research Day, held on 10th October 2016 in the Scudder Auditorium, saw an excess of 260 abstracts, among which 104 were oral presentations and 161 were posters. The abstracts were categorized into Medical Specialties, Surgical Specialties, Allied Health Sciences, Basic Sciences, Medical Students, Nursing, and Field and Epidemiology. There were 60 prize winners together in both podium and poster presentation.
The highlights of the day included Special Orations by 3 distinguished faculty: Prof. M.S. Seshadri, retired Head of Endocrinology, Prof. K.S. Balasubramanian, retired Head of Biochemistry, and Prof. Kurien Thomas, retired Head of Medicine.
The citation of the chief guest was read by Dr. Biju George, Addl. Vice Principal (Research). The Chief Guests were felicitated by Dr. Nihal Thomas, Dr. Thomas Paul, Dr. Simon Rajaratnam, Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Dr. Sitara, Dr. Sunil Chandy, Dr. Abraham Peedicayil and Dr. Thambu David.
The Shubankar Mitra Memorial Award for the best Undergraduate paper for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences was given by Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Principal, to Mr. Arunava Saha and Ms. Abhriya Dey.
The Rolling Trophy, introduced this year, was awarded to the Department of Endocrinology for obtaining the maximum points during the Annual Research Day. This was presented by the Chief Guests Prof. M.S. Seshadri and Prof. Kurien Thomas.
