World Diabetes Day Celebration 2014

As part of the World Diabetes Day celebrations, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, organized a Cookery Competition on 11th October, 2014, in an effort to create awareness on the nutritional aspects of diabetes home management.

The judges for the event were Ms. Mahendri, Dietetics, Dr. Priya Joseph, Karigiri Hospital, Dr. Thomas Samuel Ram, Radiotherapy Unit-I and Dr. AmitJiwanTirkey, Surgery Unit-I. A total of 21 teams tested their culinary skills in cooking “Diabetic Sweet & Diabetic Salads”.

Ms. Vijayalakshmi, Velappadi who prepared “Brocken wheat kitchadi, Moong Dhal Dosai, SundalVaraguSambar Rice won the 1st Prize, the second price went to Mrs. Geetha, Teacher Ida Scudder School, Vellore who prepared “MillateDosa, Green Gram Dhall, Raghi and wheat roti, Maize kuzhipaniyaram and the third Prize was awarded Mrs. RojaRekha CMC staff who prepared “MethiRaghiRotti, Multi grain methi roti, MethiChapathi, Kati Roll and BesanOmlet.

The consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. Mary Vincent, Mrs. Rajeshwari, Mrs. Gayathri, Mrs. Sundhari, Mrs. Sumathi, Mrs. Ilavarasi and Mrs. Emilinal.


COOKERY COMPETITION - PICTURES

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2014, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism organized an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “Diabetes Can Break Your Heart” on 13th November, 2014 near ISSCC Building, to create awareness and knowledge about “Diabetes Mellitus” is one of the foremost aspects of preventive care.  We are now feeling the threat of the global epidemic of “Diabetes” and it is essential to improve the awareness of not only the patient but also their family and friends.

The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Vascular Surgery, Physiotherapy, Prosthetic &Orthotic Services and Dietary, along with Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism had put up stalls which displayed awareness and knowledge about diabetes and its complications, the scope to prevent it.  Free blood tests to detect diabetes mellitus and free foot examination for person with diabetes in the exhibition.

The exhibition was started with a word of prayer by Rev. Arul Das.  The visually delightful Posters were judged by Dr. George Joseph, Professor, Department of Cardiology, Dr. Sunil Holla, Professor, Department of Anatomy,  Dr. Manjira. J, Assistant Professor, Medicine - IV and Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, HOD, Maternity Nursing

The first prize went to Ms. Joy Priyadarshini, 2nd Year MSc Nursing Student the second Prize toMs. Pheba Philip, Staff Nurse-N2 Ward, the third place to Ms. JerlineBeaulah, Staff Nurse-KNICU

The consolation prizes were awarded to Ms. Sophia Chellam, Staff Nurse-O3 West, Ms. Mahendri, HOD Dietetics, Mr. Sri Vignesh, BSc MLT 2nd Year, Ms. Sanjo Bina Koya, MTS-4 and Ms. GerlynPriya, A3 Ward.


EXHIBITION AT CMC HOSPITAL CAMPUS - PICTRUES

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2014, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes andMetabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Diso0rders" for Medical Students at CHTC on October 28, 2014. Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, Vice Principal for Undergraduate, was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 19 teams participated in the Quiz competition. Out of the 19 teams 3 teams from Government Medical College, Adukkamparai and 16 teams from CMC Vellore.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2014, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Dia-Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Nursing Students at College of Nursing, CMC Vellore on November 4, 2014. Dr. Vinita Ravindran, Deputy Dean, College of Nursing was the Chief Guest for the day.

A total of 175 students are participated in Preliminary written test and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

QUIZ FOR NURSING STUDENTS - PICTURES

“Be the change you want to see in the world” was what Mahatma Gandhi had wanted the nation to believe in. And for any significant change to occur, awareness remains the stepping stone. As the Modern civilization struggles to face deadly diabetes epidemic, awareness and knowledge of healthy life style has become the need of the hour. Centered around the World Diabetes Day celebrations, we, at the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism have taken up the daunting task of educating the young generation about the perils of diabetes and healthy ways to prevent its spread. With this aim in mind, on November 22, 2014, we organized an essay and painting competition for school students themed on

The practice of regular exercise is important for children, as it prevents a large number of non-communicable diseases, which is indeed the result of decadent lifestyle practices. There is evidence to show that children who exercise and are physically active have better indices of academic performance on a long term basis than those who do not.

A message was also given emphasizing that heart disease in diabetes may be a silent disorder and a regular cardiac checkup once in 5 years may be required

We had more than 36 school 262 students and 43 teachers participating in the competitions.

The visually delightful paintings were judged by Dr. Priya Mammen, Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Urmi Ghosh, Department of Child Health Unit-2 and Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Paediatric Nursing.

The first prize went to Ms. Anika Sarah Thomson from IDA Scudder School, he second Prize to Mr. Balamurgan. R from Shanthi Nikethanand the third place to Ms. Kiruthika.M from SnehaDeepam. Five consolation prizes were awarded to Ms. Puviarasi. M from ShanthiNikethan, Ms. HemaPriya. D from Shristi, Ms. Preethi Alex from IDA Scudder, Ms. Elavarasi from Katpadi Girls Hr Sec School and Ms. Pavithra R. from St Mary’s Girls Hr. Sec. School.

The Teachers quiz competition, was closely contested amongst five schools and after six exciting rounds, Mrs. Sheela Raju & Mrs. Anbarasi Johnson from IDA Scudder School baged the first place followed by Mrs. Marina Silvania& Mrs. Sagaya Mary from Auxillium Girls Hr Sec School in the second place and Ms. Shree Vaishnavi& Mrs. K. Baby from KAKM Matriculation School, in the third place.

The prize for the Essay competition in Tamil & English will be awarded on World Diabetes Day Valedictory function in the month of January 2015.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC conducted a series of event in the form of Cookery Competition, Nursing Quiz, Medi Quiz, Essay Writing Competition in English and Tamil, Painting competition, Teacher’s Quiz, Exhibition and Poster Competition, Teachers Training programme (about Prevention and Diabetes Management) and Self Composed Dance competition centered around school and college students around Vellore city from October 2014 to March 2015.

The chief guest for the valedictory function was Dr. Anand Job, Professor and HOU ENT-I, who advised children to understand diabetes and exercise, control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasized the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits. He quoted Dr. William Osler : “It is important for all of us to remember what we can add to life, and not what we can get from life” A dance competition on the theme “How Do Schools and Colleges Prevent Diabetes and Obesity” was held on March 7, 2015. Around 160 students from 12 schools and 11 colleges participated in the competitions. Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by Holy Cross Matric Higher Secondary School followed by St. Mary’s Matric Higher Secondary School-second and B.M.D Jain School in the third place. Among colleges, G.G.R College of Engineering obtained first prize the Scudder Memmorial College of Nursing and College of Sri Venkateshwara Polytechnic asnd College got the second and third places respectively.
