The molecular genetics of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolic disorders is an upcoming area, which has a large role in both research and diagnostic applications.

The department of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the Christian Medical College, Vellore has the appropriate infrastructure and faculty to aid in developing a molecular genetics training programme that may aid in progress of the diagnostic and research in this arena.

Each student is required to complete the coursework with minimum eight credits as a part of requirement of the PhD programme. The compulsory courses are mandatory. All other requirements for the PhD programme are as per RCB ordinances and regulations.

Vision

With this Doctoral programme at Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory, we aim to focus on advanced studies in the genetics of Endocrine and its related disorders with combined aspects of Molecular biology, Genetics and Biotechnology. This would prepare the students to take up lead roles in genetics and genomics research in academia or industry. The flexible course work will provide a broad background in the field while allowing customized emphasis on Molecular Genetics and Endocrinology. At the end of this programme, we expect our graduates to be independent scientists, innovators, and leaders of academe and private enterprise in the future where genomics is central to health sciences- research, practice, and policy.

Admission process, Eligibility and duration

The candidates with MSc/M.Tech Life sciences with a minimum of 60% or CGPA 6.5 in the qualifying exam with individual fellowships (UGC, CSIR, ICMR, INSPIRE, DBT, etc.) may apply for the Junior Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow position. The selection of research scholars will be based on the performance in written test/ interview. The candidate will be evaluated for a period of 6 months before registration. The duration of the Ph.D. programme will be minimum of 3 years and shall not exceed 5 years expect under unavoidable circumstances with the approval of DAC members. The candidate should satisfactorily complete the course work and other requirements as per RCB regulations and ordinances to be awarded with the Ph.D. degree.
