The Department of Endocrinology, CMC Vellore, hosted a vibrant cookery competition themed “Diabetic Dinner – Conquering the Night Cravings” on the evening of 27th September, 2025. The event was an exciting confluence of culinary innovation and health awareness, aimed at promoting diabetic-friendly dietary practices among the community of Vellore.

The event was presided over by Dr. Khushboo Agarwal, Assistant Professor, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, CMC Vellore. The Chief Guest for the evening was Dr. Lallu Joseph, Associate General Superintendent, CMC, Ranipet Campus. In her address, Dr. Lallu Joseph emphasized the importance of a balanced plate and portion control, and appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the public.

The judges congratulated all the participants for their creativity, zeal, and commitment to promoting healthy eating habits for people with diabetes.

About the Theme:
The concept of a “Diabetic Dinner” focuses on meals that are:
  • Rich in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber
  • Based on low glycaemic index ingredients to avoid blood sugar spikes
  • Made using wholesome foods such as millets, legumes, leafy greens, and fruits (in moderation)
  • Prepared using healthy cooking techniques like steaming, grilling, or sautéing
  • Served with mindful portion control, especially for night-time meals

The theme “Conquering the Night Cravings” highlights a common challenge among diabetic individuals—late evening hunger. It encourages nutritious dinner options that satisfy cravings while supporting better overnight sugar control.

Participation:
A total of 35 teams enthusiastically participated in the competition, including:
  • Teachers from schools & colleges in Vellore
  • Staff from CMC Vellore & CMC Ranipet Campus
  • Local homemakers

Each team presented innovative, flavorful, and nutritionally balanced dinner recipes suitable for people with diabetes.

  • Taste
  • Balance of macro & micronutrients

Essay Competition for School Students

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2025, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, organised a vibrant event comprising an Essay and Painting competition for students in grades VIII to XII, along with a Quiz competition for school teachers. The event, held on October 18th 2025, at Darling Residency, Vellore, aimed to inspire students to adopt a healthier lifestyle while addressing the challenges in diabetes prevention and management. The initiative also encouraged participants to share their learnings with their families and communities to extend the reach of the knowledge gained.

The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. George Chandy, Former Director, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, and Director, Believers Church Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla, Kerala. He emphasized the importance of diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification to combat obesity and diabetes. He also highlighted the importance of educating students about the disease, especially Type 1 Diabetes, stating that awareness helps break stigma related to the condition and insulin use, fostering acceptance and support for affected students and their families.

In diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, and Obesity, prevention becomes key. Encouraging healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and screen-time moderation can significantly reduce future health risks. Teachers and parents play a critical role in shaping and instilling these habits early in life.

The event was presided over by Dr. Padmavathi T.G, Assistant Professor, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.

Essay Competition:
With 95 English and 90 Tamil entries, students explored the theme: “Healthy Habits Today; Healthy Life Tomorrow – The Role of Parents and Teachers in Preventing Diabetes & Obesity in Children”.

Painting Competition:
A total of 98 students participated on the theme: “Technology and Humanity – A Partnership for Better Health”.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2025, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore, organised an Awareness Exhibition and Poster Competition on 14th November 2025, centred around the theme of this year’s WHO World Diabetes Day, “Diabetes across life stages”, which recognizes that every person living with diabetes should have access to integrated care, supportive environments, and policies that promote health, dignity, and self-management.

The event aimed to create awareness among the general public about diabetes prevention, early diagnosis, and holistic management, with special emphasis on well-being and lifestyle modification. Through interactive and educational activities, the programme highlighted the importance of equitable access to diabetes education, screening, and care — empowering individuals to live healthier and more informed lives.

Departments including Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Physiotherapy, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Dietetics, and Community Health Nursing, along with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, jointly hosted informative stalls. Each stall focused on specific aspects of diabetes — its complications, preventive strategies, and self-care measures — encouraging visitors to take an active role in diabetes management. To encourage participation among departments, the Best Stall Award was presented to the Department of Cardiology and Community Health Nursing, CMC Vellore.

As part of the screening initiative, blood glucose testing was conducted for more than 417 participants, who also benefited from foot and eye examinations. Awareness sessions were creatively delivered through puppet shows, posters, and interactive games, making learning both engaging and impactful. A lucky draw was conducted for the registered participants, and glucometers were presented to the winners to promote self-monitoring and personal empowerment in diabetes care.

The programme commenced with a prayer led by Rev. Deepak Gnanaprakash, Senior Chaplain. Dr. Mark Ranjan, Associate Director, served as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the event. This was followed by awareness talks in multiple languages—English by Dr. Pattani Ayushi Dineshkumar, Tamil by Dr. Sivan Arul Selvan, Telugu by Dr. Puppala Santosh, Hindi by Dr. Khushboo Agarwal, Kannada by Dr. Mohammed Anwar Hussain, and Malayalam by Dr. Roshan Reji—from the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism. Their sessions focused on the early recognition of diabetes and the significance of community participation in its prevention and control.

This year’s observance reinforced the importance of interdepartmental collaboration to promote comprehensive diabetes care and prevention. The exhibition provided an excellent platform for healthcare professionals, patients, and the community to interact and share knowledge, emphasizing that awareness and access are the first steps toward better diabetes outcomes.

The Poster Competition was evaluated by a distinguished panel consisting of Dr. Jambukulam Mohan, Consultant, Medicine Unit I, Mrs. Santhi Gladson, Professor and Nurse Manager, Paediatric Nursing, and Dr. Merlyn R., Associate Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR).

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2025, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at the CHTC Auditorium, Bagayam Campus on 6th February 2026. Dr. Tripti Jacob, Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy, CMC Vellore was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 18 teams participated in the preliminary round and 5 teams qualified to the final round. The competition was engaging and tested the students’ knowledge and clinical reasoning skills. The event was well received and successfully created awareness about diabetes and endocrine disorders among future healthcare professionals.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2025, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism organized the Diabetes Nurse Champions Quiz on January 23rd, 2026, for nursing students at the College of Nursing, CMC. The event aimed to equip future healthcare professionals with critical insights into diabetes management, prevention, and care, emphasizing the growing importance of diabetes awareness in today’s healthcare landscape. The quiz provided an excellent platform for nursing students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in diabetes care while fostering a spirit of healthy competition and teamwork.

Mrs. Shandrila Gnanatheebam Immanuel, Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing, CMC Vellore, graced the event as the Chief Guest and shared her valuable insights, encouraging students to take an active role in combating the diabetes epidemic. A total of 325 students participated in the preliminary written test, from which four teams qualified for the final round. The competition featured several engaging and challenging rounds, including Open Forum, Visual Vibe, Wordless Wonder, Risk or Reward, Turbo Talk, and Public Pulse.

Through this event, the department successfully created awareness among future healthcare professionals about the alarming rise in diabetes cases worldwide and the importance of holistic care.

The quiz enlightened students’ understanding of diabetes and its complications, empowering them to be better equipped to address the needs of patients and their families. The event was highly appreciated by participants, who described it as both informative and engaging, leaving them motivated to contribute to better diabetes care and management in their future careers.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2025–26, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, CMC Vellore, conducted a wide range of community outreach, awareness, and engagement activities over several months. These initiatives were organised under the global theme “Diabetes and Well-being: Access to Diabetes Healthcare for All,” announced by the International Diabetes Federation. What began as targeted diabetes education efforts has now evolved into a vibrant annual movement, bringing together the public, school and college students, and healthcare professionals under a unified platform to promote awareness and healthy living.

The series of events commenced with a Cookery Competition on 27th September 2025, where 35 teams comprising teachers, CMC staff, and homemakers showcased innovative healthy recipes based on the theme “Conquering the Night Cravings.” This was followed by a Quiz Program for school teachers and Essay & Painting Competitions for school students on 18th October 2025. The Essay Competition, conducted in both English and Tamil, received 185 entries on themes such as “Healthy Habits Today, Healthy Life Tomorrow” and “The Role of Parents and Teachers in Preventing Diabetes and Obesity.” The Painting Competition, themed “Technology and Humanity: A Partnership for Better Health,” saw enthusiastic participation from 98 students.

World Diabetes Day 2025 was observed on 14th November with an Exhibition and Poster Competition aligned with the WHO theme “Diabetes across Life Stages.” The exhibition featured informative stalls, demonstrations, and a screening camp, highlighting the importance of lifestyle modification, early detection, and equitable access to diabetes care. Further academic engagement included the Diabetes Nurse Champion Quiz and the Medi Quiz on Diabetes & Endocrine Disorders, held on 23rd January and 6th February 2026, respectively, testing the clinical knowledge and reasoning skills of students.

The events culminated on 14th March 2026 with a Self-Composed Music and Dance Competition for school and college students on the theme “Diabetes and Brain.” The performances creatively highlighted the impact of diabetes on cognitive function, mental well-being, and neurological health, emphasizing the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and maintaining optimal glycaemic control through healthy lifestyle practices. Participants delivered outstanding performances, effectively translating complex medical concepts into expressive artistic presentations.

The Valedictory Function was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. Jacob John, Retired Professor and Head of the Departments of Clinical Virology and Microbiology. In his address, he emphasized the critical link between diabetes and brain health, noting that the brain requires a constant supply of glucose and that imbalances can significantly affect cognitive function. He highlighted the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and stressed the importance of lifestyle modifications, particularly among younger generations, to prevent long-term complications. He also encouraged students to act as agents of change in promoting healthier lifestyles within the community.

The panel of judges included distinguished professionals: Dr. Kanagalakshmi, Professor of Community Medicine; Dr. Konduru Vidya, Associate Professor, Head and Neck Surgery; Dr. Pushkar Sharma, Assistant Professor, Endocrine Surgery; Dr. Nimmy Thomas, Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology; Dr. Abirami, Professional Dancer; and Mrs. Mary Sujatha, Professional Music Teacher.

Among the participating schools, Lakshmi Garden Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured the first prize, followed by Spring Days CBSE Senior Secondary School and BMD Jain School in second and third places, respectively. Consolation prizes were awarded to Velammal Bodhi Campus School and EVRNGGHSS, Vellore.

In the college category, College of Nursing CMC Vellore Chittoor Campus emerged as the winner, while St. John’s College of Nursing and Dr. Vimal College of Nursing secured the second and third places, respectively. Consolation prizes were awarded to College of Nursing, CMC Vellore and the School of Nursing, Karigiri.

This series of events, culminating in the valedictory function, stood as a testament to the power of awareness through creativity, performance, and education. The enthusiastic participation reflected the core message of promoting healthy living through informed choices, collective effort, and sustained engagement.
