The most significant clinical development during the years 2001–2002 was the substantial expansion and diversification of services in the field of Diabetology. Diabetes mellitus affects approximately 11% of the urban population in South India. In response to this growing burden, the Department initiated an Integrated Diabetes Outpatient Clinic, conducted twice weekly.
This unique clinic adopts a holistic approach to diabetes management and brings together a multidisciplinary team comprising endocrinologists, diabetes educators, dietitians, and physiotherapists. Comprehensive care is provided with emphasis on diet, exercise, lifestyle modification, and pharmacological therapy. In addition, specialized foot care services are offered in collaboration with general surgeons and orthopaedic specialists.
The integrated clinic model has also been extended to the community through outreach camps conducted in and around the rural and semi-urban regions of Vellore. The department is supported by a dedicated team of fourteen full-time diabetes educators, whose sustained efforts have been instrumental in strengthening the Diabetology infrastructure and in imparting in-depth education to patients regarding effective inpatient and outpatient diabetes management.
Other distinctive features of diabetes care include structured diabetes education programs, glucometer rental services and home glucose monitoring support, insulin dose titration, continuous glucose monitoring systems, and insulin pump therapy.
