About Endocrinology CMC Vellore

The Department of Endocrinology at CMC Vellore is one of India’s most reputed center for the treatment of diabetes and other endocrine disorders.  The Endocrine services at CMC Vellore were started as an Endocrine Clinic under the Department of Medicine in the year 1985. After a decade of successful growth, an independent department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was initiated in the year 1995.  This department caters to the medical needs of nearly 90,000 patients from India and Asia year after year.  The out-patient clinics in Endocrinology and metabolism attend to nearly 500 patients on Monday and Thursdays. In addition, an exclusive clinic for patients with diabetes caters to the needs of nearly 200 out-patients on Wednesdays and Saturdays, throughout the year. Besides this, the outpatient clinics in Endocrinology and Diabetes are operational at the CMC Vellore Chittoor campus and caters to the needs of patients from Andhra Pradesh.

At the academic front, the first ever super-speciality training course in Endocrinology- DNB in Endocrinology, in South India.  This was change to a DM in Endocrinology in 2011.  The number of seats for the DM course in Endocrinology at CMC, Vellore was increased from 2 to 4 seats in the year 2016. Other academic programs conducted at this department include a full-time fellowship program in Diabetes for doctors, Distance Fellowship in Diabetes (DFID) and a Short course for Diabetes counsellors and a training program for doctors and nurses who wish to hone their skills on foot-care for patients with diabetes. The diabetes educator’s training programme was first envisaged and is being conducted in this department to offer comprehensive training in diabetes counselling and management to nurses. The department imparts training to staff of several other mission hospitals on creating awareness and prevention of diabetes at the community.

As part of community outreach programs, the department commemorates the World diabetes day and World Osteoporosis Day annually and conducts multiple events targeted towards youngsters and the general public to disseminate knowledge on prevention of diabetes, obesity and its related disorders.  Clinical and basic science research has always been at the forefront of our priorities. Numerous interventional and basic science research studies are being conducted to decipher the complexities of  diabetes, Osteoporosis, obesity, thyroid and pituitary function disorders. It has garnered the reputation of an active study-site for several pharma sponsored clinical drug trials and has completed several of them successfully.

The Endocrine Molecular laboratory is a dynamic laboratory with its Next Generation Sequencing Platform (NGS). This laboratory offers genetic screening services with multiple gene panels, for variations in important genes involved in genetic disorders affecting adults and children. To cater to the needs of all patients, the laboratory receives genetic samples from other departments of the institution and various regions of India and provides it’s services at a much affordable cost to patients.   With a team of 60 staff members, this department is stands as a beacon of excellence in medical care, research and service to all patients visiting the CMC, Vellore, with hopes for better care and clinical outcomes.

The Department of Endocrinology looks after patients with hormone problems and abnormal metabolism.

Inauguration of our New Office

about endocrinology cmc velloreThe Office and clinical trials unit of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism was inaugurated on November 15’ 2006. The new office was dedicated by Rev. Malhia Joshua and Professor Ib Bygbjerg from the Department of International Health University of Copenhagen in Denmark unveiled the plaque in the presence of Dr. George M. Chandy. Dr. Abraham Joseph, director, Schieffelin Institute of Research and Training Centre, Karigiri, Dr. George Chandy, former Director, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, Dr M.S. Seshadri Professor and Head and Dr. Nihal Thomas, Associate Professor, department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, CMC, Vellore lighted the lamp and announced the inauguration of the New Office of the department.
