World Diabetes Day Programs
   Diabetes is on the increase in our country. As heredity, lifestyle changes contribute to its increased prevalence, we are focusing on the awareness among school children, teachers and thereby hoping to promote one to one education. The following programmes we conducted in commemoration with the Diabetes week celebration.

Walk-a-thon
In commemoration of World Diabetes Week 2007 - Walkathon was conducted to create awareness among the public on 14th November 2007. Around 660 participants including school students, College students, Staff from CMC and Public from vellore participated in the walkathon.
     
 

Mr.Arul Raj Chief District Magistrate ,Vellore inagurated the walkathon which started from Ida scudder school, Vellore to Don Bosco school, Vellore followed by a public meeting .

    The Diabetes Cookery Competition    
         
    The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of Christian Medical College Vellore- conducted a diabetes cookery competition on October 16th Saturday at the Darling residency hotel in Vellore.    
         
    This is the fourth such competition which heralds the forthcoming world diabetes day which is to be on the 14th of November--- nearly a month away. The idea of this competition is to promote awareness amongst cooks and homemakers with regards to healthy dietary habits and food in connection to diabetes and obesity.    
         
    The themes for previous years varied from diabetes meal to a diabetes breakfast. This time the challenge thrown open was that of a diabetes dessert- something unthinkable considering that desserts are associated with sweet culinary items.    
         
    Despite a busy festive day- there were 10 registrations for the competition.
The judges had a challenging time and spent nearly an hour and a half trying to determine the top notchers in the competition. The judges were Mr Venkatta Subbu- owner Darling residency, Mrs Sarah Jacob-retired HOD dietary department- CMC vellore and Mrs Mary Johnson- deputy nursing superintendent- CMC vellore.

    The winner was Mrs Latha Ravikumar who conjured strawberry yogurt with bread stuff and smoothies- a dish which had fresh strawberries, yogurt, cinnamon, milk powder, bread slices ,flax seed and almonds. The second place went to Mrs Meenakshi Jain who made oats halwa and the third place went to Mrs Roja Rekha who made a dish with consisted of wheat rava, green gram and musk melon seeds.    
         
    The decision of the judges was was based on the calorie content of food, portion quantum, ingredients used, affordability and flavour and appearance.    
         
    The competition this year will extend to 4 other cities: Trichi, Madurai and Coimbatore and will be jointly hosted by hotel darling residency and Endocrinology, CMC Vellore. The top two finalists from each city will get to participate in the grand finale in Vellore in the month of January. The programme was organised by Mrs Mercy, Dr Anulekha, Ms Vijaya, Mrs Jhansi and Mr Vasanth from the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Christian Medical College, Vellore.

In Commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism conducted a Poster Competition for school students and quiz competition for school teachers around Vellore City, on 26.11.2010 at Darling Residency, Officers line,Vellore-1. Mrs. Jasmine Anand, Professor & Deputy Nursing Superintendent,CMC,& Dr. Minnie Faith, Associate Professor, Department of Bio-Chemistry, Bagayam,CMC were the judges.
